I have a personal love for Kilchoman because I "worked" there for a week with the 3 still men there. I got to experience the every day life of an Illeach, a term for an Islay native, and see what "everyday" life is from the staff. This image is dedicated to their 10 year anniversary in 2015. I decided to focus on the close shot of this building, instead of drawing the whole landscape, because it is supposed to represent the inner-workings of the distillery in an intimate level. For example, while I was in the still house, making alcohol cuts, I scooped the spirit from the spirit safe and measured the alcohol with a gravity (that's what the tool is called). This method is unusual because most distilleries will have their spirit safe locked. Also, I heard stories about co-workers who noted that it was difficult to go to the hospital because it requires to take days off from work, so one could go to the mainland to get a check-up.

I think sometimes people, including myself, take whisky for granted. We get caught up with the glory of trying rare, limited-edition stuff, but we forget it comes out of a distillery and the work is laborious; the pot stills heat up the room and make people sweat. In many ways it is like working in a factory to construct garments or being in a kitchen cooking. Sometimes we forget that there's a lot of people coming together to create a product. We eat at restaurants without thinking how long it takes the food to cook. We wear expensive clothes and forget people are in sweat shops making these items for us.
